On Her Accent

It tended to change, her pronunciation, when she talked about the places she had lived before.

“Three thou-sand feet,” in regaling on her Hawaiian life on a mountain, whereas “right on the ocean” rang off bass recalling White Rock, B.C., sounded safety after having dealt with the “in-surance” in Las Vegas after a drunk driver slammed into her.

She was better at accents than she gave herself credit for, inconsistent only to ones she wasn’t native to.
