The Burn

The effigies stood silent, waiting for the tinder bits beneath them to explode in conflagration. The crowd undulated and was noisy, not impatient but aware of the delay as the fire crews made sure the flames would be safe: their taming of the untameable. When they lit up they were like little suns, undulating in space and the awe of the crowd silenced as the wood pieces popped from the fire that engulfed them.
